Michigan is lucky to have awesome access to a huge range of great off-roading areas. The thousands of miles of trails give us tons of options for ATVing, from riding the dunes, to cruising through the woods. VMS Holland wants to share some awesome locations for our patrons in the Silver Lake area to enjoy.
ATV and UTV Areas for Use Around Silver Lake, MI
The area around Silver Lake has access to some awesome trails. Of course, in the lower peninsula you can find awesome trails when you travel near or far, so here are a few options for folks who are looking get out on their Can-Am® side by side or Polaris® ATV and explore beautiful state of Michigan.
Silver Lake ORV Area
You can't get any closer than this for awesome off-roading. Right in Silver Lake's backyard, The Silver Lake ORV area in Silver Lake State Park is a great place to strap on your sand tires and cruise on the dunes. Open from the beginning of April to the end of October, this area is 2000 acres of pure, open riding on the sand. As with other dune locations, this ORV area requires orange safety flags. Regulations and permits apply, and operational hours vary by season, so make sure you check out this location's website (listed below) before you go out to ride.
Bummers Roost ORV Trail
For a weekend trip, take a drive across the lower peninsula the Cheyboygan County, and take a ride on the Bummers Roost Trail. Surrounded by great areas for camping and featuring a range of terrain from simple, to challenging, this trail provides 17 miles of great riding. With mud, water holes, and plenty of great ups and downs, this trail lends itself to experienced, and new riders alike so you can make your visit to the Bummers Roost Trail a trip for the whole family. This trail area also connects to the Black Lake Trail system which provides tons of additional riding to the tune of 45 more miles.
Snowmobile Trails
When it's time to pack up the ATV, it's probably the season to bust out your Arctic Cat® or Ski-Doo snowmobile. With tons of trails for winter fun, Michigan's lower peninsula is an ideal place for snowmobilers. We've picked some places within a few hours of Silver Lake that are perfect for some cold weather adventuring.
Snowmobile Trail 3
Not far north east of Silver Lake is a wide swath of the Manistee National Forest. Running through and around this forest area is trail 3, that runs largely north/south around the Irons area. In the heart of so much protected forest you can find awesome snowmobiling. The trails are groomed well in places, however some sections of this trail are deemed “rough” because they are not authorized for grooming. Be aware when you're riding, and make sure you ride this area with friends, and check the weather before you take off.

Trail 6 runs east west through the northern edge of the Manistee National forest, intersecting with trail 3 in places. These two snowmobile trails both feature plenty of amenities in and around the Manistee National Forest area, including places to find food, gas, and lodging. Make sure you've planned your route out thoroughly before you take off so you'll have a fun successful day, and a place to warm up your feet when the ride is over.
